What Does an A&R Actually Do?

A&R stands for artists and repertoire. An A&R finds and signs talent for a label or publisher, then guides the creative side of the record: pairing artists with the right songs, producers, and writers, and shepherding a project from first session to finished album. A&R is the label's talent and taste department, not its checkbook. Contracts live with Business Affairs and royalty checks live with Royalty Accounting.

The Job in Plain Terms

On any given week, an A&R is listening through demos and unreleased packs, taking meetings with managers and publishers, sitting in sessions, and arguing internally for budget on the projects they believe in. The two halves of the title describe the two halves of the work: artists means scouting and signing, and repertoire means the songs. Matching a signed artist with the record that becomes the single is as much the job as discovering the artist in the first place.

A good A&R is also the artist's advocate inside the building. When a project needs a bigger sample budget, a different mixer, or three more weeks, the A&R is the one making that case to people who think in spreadsheets.

A&R Coordinator vs Rep vs Manager vs Executive

The titles are a ladder, and the day-to-day changes as you climb it:

What an A&R Cannot Do for You

This is the misunderstanding that costs creators the most time. The A&R who signed the record cannot fix your money. If you produced or wrote on a signed record and have not been paid, the fix is paperwork that lives in other departments: the producer agreement, the letter of direction with Business Affairs, and statements with Royalty Accounting. Chasing the A&R about royalties feels natural because they are the person you know, but it aims the follow-up at someone with no authority over the check.

How Producers and Writers Get on A&R Radar

A&Rs find records through a small number of trusted channels: managers they know, publishers, other producers, and writers already in their sessions. Cold email works occasionally; a warm send from someone whose taste they trust works constantly. The practical path is building relationships with the people around the A&R, and having a pack that is undeniable when the window opens. We wrote about that process in how producers get placements.

Label A&R vs A&R Consulting

Not every project has a label A&R, and not every label has enough A&R bandwidth for every signing. Independent artists and even labels bring in outside A&R on a project basis for song selection, sequencing, and producer pairing. That is a different engagement with a different structure, covered in what is A&R consulting.
